KEYWORD DENSITY – HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH

Keyword density – how much is enough?

Most people who want to get on top of Google, know that the legal and best way to do it is to provide relevant searchable content upon your website. Yet one must also be wary to include a good number of naturally spaced keywords on the site to achieve a good SEO %. However, over-use of keywords can sometimes constitute spamming and may lead to Google punishing the website in rankings. (In my blogs I will often refer specifically to Google, and not to other search engines, as Google seems to have the harshest and most strict conditions of search).

The ‘key’ to keyword density (pardon the pun) lies, in being able to write well. Make sure that your sentences flow naturally and do not sound and look like they have been modified specifically for search engine purposes. The best advise, I would give is to write your article / blog / advertisement or web content and later go through it and see where you can replace words with key terms that would help you improve your search engine ranking.

How much is too much?

Some SEO’s (black hat SEO’s) sometimes use tricks to try and fool the search engine into believing that there is a greater keyword density on the website than there is in actual fact. This can be done by masking the amount of content on the site, by changing the colour of the text, creating hidden <div></div> tags, some clever use of CSS, redirect pages optimized for search engines, and commented text amongst other techniques. Whilst these techniques can sometimes work, (and I have seen a number of sites get away with it), usually, Google picks up on these cheats and sandboxes the website for several months until the website is fixed. Another reason not to try black-hat SEO approach is that, most of these techniques are already well known to Google and their technicians and steps have already been taken to avoid the black hat SEO traps. An example of this is ===commented text==, which is no longer read by Google, and is therefore useless on your website.

The key point to remember is to make you site use friendly first and foremost. If your website has your targeted keyword in every sentence, it will look phoney and unprofessional, as a rule of thumb, two or three keywords every paragraph is a pretty good benchmark.

The best way to achieve a good keyword density, and therefore a good ranking is to write naturally and check over your work to make sure that it looks and sounds good. A great way to check how your website looks to a search engine is by using the tool on   http://whois.domaintools.com/adaid.com.au . And remember, any risky or dodgy SEO tactics could cost you time offline, and may cause your ranking to diminish significantly.
